Before You Print Another Folder

There's a specific object that shows up in a lot of well-run households: a folder, sometimes a binder, sometimes just a stack of printed pages held together with a clip. Cleaning schedules. Emergency numbers. A page on how the washing machine actually works, because the manual was in the wrong language and somebody finally translated it by hand.

We know this one personally. Paz started as exactly this. A printed folder, made after watching seven housekeepers come and go in a single year, each one starting from zero because nothing about how the house actually ran had ever been written down anywhere they could find it.

The folder was a genuinely good instinct. It was also, it turned out, the wrong shape for the problem. A folder is a paper database with no search, no updates, and no memory of who changed what or when. Add a new instruction and the folder doesn't get smarter, it just gets longer, until eventually nobody reads it front to back anymore, which is exactly what happened with those eleven handwritten pages left on a counter for the next housekeeper. Four pages read, seven ignored, not out of carelessness, just because eleven pages is a lot to read on your first nervous day in a new house.

If you have a folder like this in your own home, that's not a failure. It's evidence you already understand the actual problem: that a house full of staff runs on knowledge that has to survive the person who currently holds it. That instinct is correct. It's just been stuck, for lack of a better option, in a format that can't update itself, can't be searched, and can't speak more than one language.

The next version of that folder isn't a better folder. It's the same instinct, running as something that stays current on its own, reaches every person in the household in the language they actually use, and doesn't go quiet the day someone stops reading it front to back. That's the whole reason Paz exists.
